Awareness - Desire - Knowledge - Ability - Reinforcement
This model of change management focuses on the five key stages that people go
through in any change process.
ADKAR is an acronym for:
Awareness. Recognises the need to change
Desire. Wanting to change
Knowledge. Knowing what to change to, and how it can be done
Ability. Being actually able to change
Reinforcement. Consolidating and strengthening changes
The model helps managers and employees understand and monitor the degree to which individual
people have changed and what needs to happen next.
This people-focused model is important in any change management project because is recognises
that change in an organisation cannot take place without taking people along this route.
These 'personal journeys' along the ADKAR path also must also correspond to, and be synchronised
with, the associated stages of change at the corporate level.
